Responding to H1N1
and
other Communicable Diseases

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared that there is an H1N1 (swine flu) epidemic including Northwest Arkansas. There is the possibility that other forms of influenza or other communicable diseases could also reach epidemic proportions. I want us to take certain proactive measures on Sunday Morning.

First, when we receive our communion, if you are uncomfortable receiving the wine from the chalice or by intinction (dipping the host into the chalice), please know that receiving the bread only is sufficient. After you receive the bread, you may leave the altar rail.

Second, please be sure that the person sitting next to you is comfortable with physical contact during the passing of the peace. A smile and a nod of the head is an acceptable way to “pass the peace.”

Third, hand washing is important. I always wash my hands before, after, and during the service. If I sneeze, I try and sneeze into my sleeve and then pause, go and wash my hands, rub in sanitizer, and then continue.

If inoculations become available, I will be inoculated for H1N1. I already have received the seasonal flu shot.

It has been recommended that the clergy make more phones calls and try to visit in hospital and nursing home settings less frequently, unless of course it is important to be present, such a before and after a surgery or during an emergency.

If you are ill including fever, please read the morning office at home and we can pray for you if you call the office and let us know your condition.

Check the CDC web site for other precautions and the World Health Organization (WHO) for information.

We must not allow our irrational fears to control us. We only need to be wise and make good decisions.
